Mahendra cave is a well known tourist attraction in Pokhara, Nepal. It is a naturally occurring limestone cave that dates back millions of years. This cave was found after following the tigers as they used to eat domestic animals of that area. It is believed to be found in 2012 B.S. The late King Mahendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev, who visited the cave in the 2016 B.S., inspired the name.
The cave is just a short drive from the city center and is situated in the northern portion of Pokhara Valley in Batulechaur-16. Visitors can use flashlights to explore the 200-meter-long cave's dimly lit chambers and tunnels.
Bindhyabasini Ma. Bi. has been protecting and overseeing Mahendra Cave from 2031 B.S. A 7-year Master Plan for the development of the cave as a tourist destination was started, but it was postponed because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The total plan's budget is 21 crore.
A Children's Park, a Zoo that attempts to conserve the species in and around the Mahendra Cave Jungle area, and a Maze for amusement purposes are all part of the 46 Ropani of land that make up the garden area surrounding the cave. A variety of work relating to the cave's adornment is being done as part of the Mahendra Cave Development project.
Visitors can view a variety of limestone stalactites, stalagmites, and other formations inside the cave that were created over thousands of years by the interaction of water and minerals. The cave also boasts a natural skylight that lets daylight shine into the interior chambers during the day.
